Christopher Coleman wins Metropolis Art Prize

Christopher Coleman has won the Metropolis Art Prize for his animation The Magnitude of the Continental Divides that premiered at Lump in April. It will be screened in Times Square on Thursday, December 17th from 7 - 8pm.

If You Build It We will Burn It is an exhibition of two interrelated installations by Jerstin Crosby. In these works, Crosby lists among his references conceptual starting points such as vegetarianism, environmental extremism, 80's sitcoms, TV commercials, local news shows, community bulletin boards, subversive counter cultures, and medieval Flemish tapestries.

More overt artistic references occur in the smaller of the two installations, titled, Visual Representation of Invisible Processes. Here, Crosby cross-references last century art history influences like Land Art and Calder's mobile sculptures by adhering meticulously-modeled ceramic trail-mix to a black and white poster of Robert Smithson's "Spiral Jetty", and by creating a kinetic sculpture from collaged vegetarian food packages and poorly-braided hemp.

In the main room of the gallery, a more subtle installation allows one to enter a one-bedroom apartment that was burned to the ground by environmentally-motivated activists. It acts as a cage around the viewers while both romanticizing the event and playing off of recent installations by artists Michael Asher, and William Cordova.

Jerstin Crosby currently lives and makes work in Hillsborough, NC, and was born in Dothan, Alabama in 1979. He is an active member of the Lump-based collaborative group Team Lump, and producer of Acid Rain Production, a community access tv show that broadcasts new media and video art. His work has been exhibited at the Southeastern Center of Contemporary Art, Winston-Salem, the Bemis Center of Contemporary Art, Omaha, NE, Cell Project Space, London, UK, Heaven Gallery, Chicago, IL, and Exit Art, NYC, among others. This is his second solo exhibition at Lump.

On Saturday, August 22, Lump will hold its 3rd annual benefit event. The event, which is for one night only, will start at 7 pm A five dollar donation is suggested, to support Lump activities for the upcoming season.
Past benefits have included live music performances by bands such as The Bowerbirds, Scooner and Phon. This year’s event will depart from that tradition, featuring a dance party led by FrequeNC records, based out of Chapel Hill. The FrequeNC dj crew will include DJ Juan, DJ Nasty Boots and Datahata, and they will bring their infamous house party to Raleigh.

The benefit will include a video screening by Acid Rain Production, with videos from their first season by artists David Colagiovanni, Peter Burr, Lydia Moyer, Carl Diehl, Michael Robinson, Thad Kellstadt, Jesse McLean, Laura Larson, Niels Post, Jacob Ciocci, Shana Moulton, and David Dunn.

There will also be a presentation by live video mixing artist Megan McKissack. Megan is based out of Asheville, NC, where she edits and mixes video for a public access TV show called Mount Dungeon.

Lump is inviting its fans and friends to come out and show their support by attending this one-of-a-kind event.

TeamLump presents DIY Rapture at Cell Projects, London

TeamLump is traveling to Cell Projects in London to install DIY Rapture, an installation exploring American cults and their followers. The exhibition will include two large scale collaborative sculptures and individual work including drawing, painting, video and sculpture by Leah Bailis, Jerstin Crosby, Josh Rickards, Bill Thelen and Tory Wright. We've also created a limited-edition zine (30) to commemorate the show. Phon will be playing during the opening and has created some awesome new sounds to be played throughout the show's run. If you know any one in London, please tell them to stop by for a lil' North Carolina love, Rawleigh style. The opening is Friday, July 3rd from 7-10pm.

Lump will hold its second annual benefit party on Friday, August 15, from 7-11 pm. The event will feature performances from two awesome local bands, Phon and Schooner. Donations will be accepted at the door.
Now entering its 13th year, Lump has brought emerging and conceptual art to a wider audience in the Triangle. In the process, Lump has been proud to play a vital role in the rebirth of Raleigh’s downtown area. Lump has featured many local national and international artists, giving them an exhibition venue not normally available in this area.
Proceeds from this benefit event will help Lump to continue operations for the next year.

Serving as a classical-urban ambassador for a widening global audience, Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) unites his classical music roots with a multicolored spectrum of contemporary black popular music. DBR is a composer, violinist, and bandleader who seamlessly blends funk, rock, hip-hop and classical music into a new, personal sonic vision.

The SQ UNIT, a string quartet that also performs as part of DBR’s band – THE MISSION, will perform a range of works, including pieces written by DBR. In addition, DBR will discuss the influence of the visual artist on a composer and how he incorporates their work into his pieces.

This exhibition will contain new drawings, paintings, books, photographs and sculptures. The work ranges from small drawings of spaceships to large paintings of insects.
